What (who) are… Celebrants?

The AOIC President and his Vices

coffee, company, conversation - independent celebrantsWho are celebrants? What does it mean? Where can I find one? Why might I want one?  What is an Independent Celebrant?

The first time I told someone I was a celebrant they looked at me a little befuddled.

They were quiet for a moment, then said, “So, how long have you been celibate?” !!!!

Generally speaking the minute I mentioned celebrant most people don’t think THAT, but they do still get it wrong.

When I say ‘Independent Celebrant’ they hear ‘non-religious’.

It’s a common mistake, the assumption that celebrants are ‘Humanist’. Some are, obviously. But many of us are INDEPENDENT. And independent is about INCLUSIVITY, FLEXIBILITY, and CHOICE. Meaning we offer any combination of any religions, spiritual beliefs, or personal practises. And we deliver ceremonies to meet your needs. Whoever you are.

Literally, the term Celebrant simply means “one who celebrates”.

We independent celebrants provide celebrations and commemorations that are as unique and personal as you are. So, if you want a prayer, and a chant, and a meditation, and a rendition of Highway to Hell, all in the same funeral service then we’ll make that happen.

Independent Celebrants are officiants for any (or all) celebrations and commemorations from birth to death and everything in between. We are as individual and unique as you are, providing you with choice and flexibility. The only thing we can’t yet offer is the legal bit of a marriage (see Wedding Law Reform). But you can use an independent celebrant to create a beautiful and personal celebration of love and unity before or after a registrar marriage and it will be magical.
I’ve written loads about Independent Celebrants and the benefits of choosing a trade association member via the Association of Independent Celebrants 750 members
